The original Skate launched in September 2007 to critical acclaim, with two sequels, Skate 2 and Skate 3. following in January 2009 and May 2010, respectively. The announcement of the new Skate during EA Play 2020 was the first time the series had been mentioned publicly in the decade since Skate 3’s release.
The return of the Skate franchise follows Activision’s reprisal of the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series last year. Remakes of the first two games in that franchise, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2, were packaged together in Vicarious Visions’ Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, which quickly became the best-selling release in the series’ history, topping 1 million units sold in its first week.
